On Wednesday, Big Brother Naija winner, White Money, had taken to his Instagram page to announce a challenge for his new song, White Money’s 500k Challenge.
He urged social media users to post a short video of the new dance routine vibing to the song on social media and tag him to the videos.
He revealed that the video with the highest likes will win 50k weekly, while the ultimate winner will walk home with a star prize of 500k at the end of the challenge
This is not the first time a musician is starting a challenge on social media to promote their song, Tiwa Savage did that for his “Somebody’s Son” track some weeks ago, but when I saw White Money’s announcement yesterday I understood what this may be all about.
White Money had come under serious criticism since the release of his song a few days ago. The song which has garnered about 645k views on YouTube in six days has received a lot of negative reviews, with some people calling on him to abandon music because it is not his calling.
Coming up with this challenge at the time when the song has been receiving backlash is quite a smart move from him, and some of those who condemned the song may even join the challenge to get a chance to win the prize money.
Maybe seeing videos of people dancing to the song on Instagram, TikTok and Triller will generate love for the song. I think this is a strategy from White Money to bring the song closer to people, and with money involved, I am certain that a good number of people will take part in the challenge. But we can only wait to see if the challenge will create the necessary effect.
