Popular Nollywood actor, Lari Williams, dies at 81 [PHOTO]

Lari Williams, who starred in hit soap operas like Village Headmaster, Ripples, and Mirror in the Sun, died on Sunday at his home in Ikom, Cross River State, Nigeria’s South-South region. He’d been sick for quite some time.

His death, at the age of 81, was announced in a statement provided to this publication by his family.

Williams received a high national honor during his lifetime: Member of the Order of the Federal Republic in 2008.

The dead served as the first president of the Actors’ Guild of Nigeria (AGN) and had a five-decade career.

As a bright and industrious teenager, Williams went overseas shortly after independence to further his education in England.

Williams attended Lagos’ CMS Grammar School. He was the first actor to appear on the 1,200-foot-high Zuma Rock in Abuja FCT, where he performed Maman Vatsa’s poem “The bird that sings in the rain.”

He has taught Theatre Arts at the University of Lagos, Lagos State University, and the University of Calabar in Nigeria.
